The McKean County Historical Society, incorporated in 1902, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories of McKean County.

Since 1924 the Society has operated a museum. Artifacts include the Emery Lewis weapons collection, Civil War items and early industry pieces. It is open from April to end of October, for 100 scheduled days; other times by appointment.

Since 2001 the Society has provided humanity’s programming highlighting historical events.

The Society maintains eight display cases in the courthouse and has an annual display/mini museum at the County Fair.

The Society is managed by a board of nine directors and four officers. The daily tasks are seen to by a staff: executive secretary, secretary and maintenance person. Volunteers assist with tours, maintenance, displays and other needs. Over the winter months the museum is closed; time is spent organizing for the next year and keeping up with correspondence and research.
